WATCH: Small business owner speaks about Trump administration’s support during COVID-19

Sisters Catalina and Madeline Lauf, who are from Chicago, spoke on the first night of the Republican National Convention on Aug. 24, 2020. One sister, who owns a children’s nutritional company, spoke about receiving a Paycheck Protection Loan to keep her employees on payroll during the COVID-19 pandemic, and praised President Trump for understanding that “small business is the backbone of our economy.” There have been concerns about the rollout of the loans and who has been receiving them. A report released by the Small Business Administration in July found that businesses owned by members of Congress and a law practice representing President Trump were among the thousands of entities that received these loans during the first months of the pandemic. The party planned a mix of virtual and in-person events in North Carolina and Washington, D.C., for its nominating convention after the coronavirus pandemic interrupted plans for a traditional nominating event.
