Former Acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell spoke on the third night of the Republican National Convention on Aug. 26, 2020. Grenell criticized the Democrats for blaming “a global pandemic that started in China on President Trump.” Many believe Trump’s lack of action during the early spread, however, exacerbated the scope of the spread of the pandemic. He also said, “they still blame Russia for Hillary Clinton’s loss in 2016,” even though the Special Counsel investigation found evidence of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. He also accused former President Barack Obama and former Vice President Joe Biden for launching surveillance efforts on the Trump campaign in 2016. A House Intelligence Committee investigation in 2017 found no evidence to support this claim. Similarly, Grenell accused Biden of requesting hidden information on Michael Flynn from intelligence officers three weeks before Trump’s inauguration. Biden’s office made a lawful request to unmask an American’s name on classified information to better understand a report, and Flynn’s name happened to appear in the document. This request, which was made in January, after the inauguration took place, was logged under Biden’s name, but could have been made by someone in his office, since requests are usually logged under the name of the senior official.
