Pete Buttigieg testifies at Senate confirmation hearing for transportation secretary

The Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee held a confirmation hearing to consider Pete Buttigieg for transportation secretary. Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, would be the first openly LGBTQ Senate-confirmed Cabinet member.

Buttigieg outlined his vision to uphold the safety of travelers, improve the nation’s infrastructure system and fulfill President Biden’s infrastructure goals amid the COVID-19 pandemic, according to his prepared opening remarks. He also discussed his experience dealing with infrastructure and transportation issues as mayor of South Bend and how that will help guide him as he approaches issues and funding for the department.
