Officer Mia Nguyen says strong women in leadership drew her to the Seattle Police Department. For Mia, former Chiefs Kathleen O’Toole and Carmen Best have been inspirations and trusted voices during her police career. In turn, Mia wants to be a person of trust for members for the entire community, answering 911 calls with dignity and respect. As a Vietnamese woman and a member of the LGBTQ community, Mia says she wants to be a familiar face for people to turn to for tough conversations about the role of police in Seattle.
“Those members of the community just need someone to be a bridge, to be a lighthouse, and to be a beacon. Systemic racial oppression is extremely real and that’s not something that’s going to be fixed overnight. We have to start fixing things at a local level.”
