2. SOUNDBITE (English) Robert Healy, pilgrim from Ireland:
“Well I think just really important to be here, to show our respect to the Holy Father. It actually wasn’t planned, we just decided to come last minute. So we came, we flew from Dublin last night, we’re staying for one day, home tonight then. We just felt it was very important to be here.”

4. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Blanca Moreno de Barreda, pilgrim from Spain living in Rome:
“I have come to greet Pope Francis because he is the pope, he is our pope, the father of the whole church and also the father of all humanity because he has made so many signs of closeness to people, to the last ones, to those who need everything. I think accompanying him in this moment is also a way of thanking Pope Francis even though he is surely in heaven. I also pray for the future pope.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Kathryn Plazek, pilgrim from the U.S., living in Rome:
“Yes it’s pretty early. I got up at 4:30 to be here at 5am, like everybody else in this line, to pay my respects to Pope Francis. To thank him so much for everything that he’s done for the Church and for me personally as a Catholic and to pray for the next pope. And to be together with people from so many different places, so many parts of the world, we hear the accents. There’s an Indian priest behind me, there are Italians next to me. So just to live this special moment together with the whole Church.”

STORYLINE:
Thousands of mourners were waiting in line from before dawn on Thursday to pay their respects to Pope Francis who is lying in state in a simple wooden coffin inside St. Peter’s Basilica.
The number of faithful who came to see the pope was so high that Vatican officials decided to keep the doors open all night, closing the basilica for just an hour Thursday morning for cleaning.
“I got up at 4:30 to be here at 5 a.m. like everybody else in this line, to pay my respects to Pope Francis, said Kathryn Plazek, a U.S. pilgrim living in Rome. "To thank him so much for everything that he’s done for the Church and for me personally as a Catholic and to pray for the next pope.”
She described a sense of global community that had formed among the pilgrims, who were waiting in the line for hours together.
Figures released by the Vatican showed more than 20,000 people had paid their respects during the first 8 ½ hours of the public viewing on Wednesday.
