STORYLINE:
Cardinal Pietro Parolin recited a rosary prayer in Rome’s Santa Maria Maggiore’s Basilica on Tuesday evening, in remembrance of Pope Francis.
A senior figure in the Vatican, Cardinal Parolin has served as the Vatican’s Secretary of State since 2013 and as a member of the Council of Cardinals since 2014.
The prayer took place one day after the Pope’s death.
Many people gathered outside of the Basilica to pay homage to Holy Father.
"(He made) Strong actions, actions that will remain in the memory of all Catholics, and above all, (his actions) will open new discussions, new behaviour in the Church towards God’s people," said Pedro Marques, a priest from Portugal who travelled to Rome to be present at Pope Francis’ funeral.
"It is important to be here because we have to stay near to a person that has been a great man, a great person" added Andrea Sasanelli, a devotee and Roman citizen who attended the rosary prayer.
