"That was really a response to what we already knew: that it is a kidnapping. Our children are vulgarly kidnapped, our children are being used as merchandise as if they were a bottle to be exchanged. And it should not be and that is why we came here, because where are the human rights of our children? They are not criminals. They are there because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time, but if you look at the majority of those who are here, none of them have criminal records."

9. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Tibisay Martínez, mother of Venezuelan detainee:
"On one hand, it does give us that comfort that we now know they are there. And the only thing we want is for them (El Salvador) to return them to us. Well, I really don’t know. Right now, I feel my head blocked. I have a lot of things going through my head. The only thing I want is for my son to come back."

STORYLINE:
Relatives of Venezuelans held in an El Salvador mega prison organized a new protest outside the UN’s offices in Caracas Tuesday.

At the gathering, the mother of one of the Venezuelans passed out as she cried of grief for her imprisoned son.

Many of them showed outrage at El Salvador’s president Nayib Bukele’s proposal to exchange Venezuelan political prisoners for migrants deported from the United States and currently jailed in El Salvador.

Maduro called the proposal “completely illegitimate, illegal, abusive,” and said the proposal confirms that the migrants are prisoners “without due process.”

The Venezuelan government has described the detention of it’s citizens in El Salvador as a “kidnapping,” arguing they committed no crimes in that country.

Bukele made the proposal Sunday in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, listing the names of several detainees — including relatives of opposition leaders, campaign staff, activists and journalists — many of whom were arrested after the disputed July elections.
