“There are no winners in tariff wars or trade wars, and protectionism leads nowhere. Decoupling and breaking chains will only isolate oneself. Regarding the tariff war initiated by the United States, China’s stance is clear- we do not want to fight, but we are not afraid to fight. We will fight to the end if you want to have a tariff war, but if you want to have negotiations, our door is open. If the U.S. truly wants to resolve issues through dialogue and negotiation, it should stop threats and blackmail and engage in dialogue with China on the basis of equality, respect, and mutual benefit.”

STORYLINE:
China’s Foreign Ministry on Wednesday reiterated its call on the U.S. to stop “threats and blackmail” against the country after President Donald Trump said he would “substantially” reduce tariffs on China.
At a news event at the White House on Tuesday, Trump admitted that a 145% tariff on Chinese goods was steep and that it would “come down substantially.”
“But it won’t be zero,” he added.
Trump’s remarks came after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the ongoing tariffs showdown against China is unsustainable and he expected a de-escalation in the trade war.
Asked about Trump’s latest remarks at a daily news briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun just reiterated the country’s opposition to the tariff hikes.
“We will fight to the end if you want to have a tariff war, but if you want to have negotiations, our door is open,” said Guo.
Separately, Guo said China “strongly condemns” the attack on tourists in Indian-controlled Kashmir on Tuesday, which killed at least 26 people and injured more than a dozen.
It was the worst assault targeting civilians in years, but the restive region has been the scene of much violence in the past.
“China firmly opposes all forms of terrorism. We express our condolences to the victims and extend sincere sympathies to the families of the victims and the injured,” said Guo.
The attack came as U.S. Vice President JD Vance was in India, which evoked memories of an even deadlier attack in 2000 shortly before a visit to India by then-President Bill Clinton.
At the briefing, Guo once again denied Ukraine’s allegation that Chinese nationals were found participating in Russia’s operation against Ukraine after the Chinese ambassador to Ukraine was summoned by the foreign ministry.
“We have made clear our stance. China is firmly opposed to unwarranted accusations and political manipulation,” said Guo.
Following the recent capture of two Chinese citizens fighting for Russia’s military against Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Tuesday that the country’s security service department found more Chinese nationals working in a factory producing drones for Russia.
