STORYLINE:
Cardinals at the Vatican said they hoped for a short conclave Wednesday, following a procession that brought Pope Francis’ body to St. Peter’s basilica to lie in state until his funeral on Saturday.
"I think it will not be long," said South Korean Cardinal Lazzaro You Heung-sik after taking part in the procession. Asked whether the next pope could be Asian, he said: "For the Lord there is no West, nor East."
Others signalled their hope for the Catholic Church to continue in the progressive direction for which Francis was credited.
Francis "used very nice expressions," said Cardinal Mario Zenari, dicastery for Eastern churches. "‘The church as a house with open doors’; that is the right direction,” he added.
The Argentine pontiff is remembered for his humble style, concern for the poor and insistent prayers for peace. He died on Monday at age 88.
