STORYLINE:
Thousands of faithful gathered in Rio de Janeiro’s Saint George Parish on Wednesday for Saint George’s Day, honoring Rio State’s patron saint with masses, candles, and colorful traditions.

The celebration, which began at dawn, drew people from various faiths, including Candomblé and Umbanda.

The event also paid tribute for Pope Francis, who died on Monday, adding a solemn note to the festivities.

“A feeling of emptiness, even for what he (Pope Francis) had been building over the years as pontiff. But I think he also leaves a legacy," said Ramon Machado after he lit candles and prayed holding small Saint George Statue.

"May the next successor come in the same direction and may the Church always be able to move in the direction that everything that involves the sacred for humanitarian reasons, as its the initial premise of religion,” Machado added.

Besides the traditional Saint George projections outside the parish and fireworks at dawn, images of Pope Francis were also projected and a video showing his visit to Rio in 2013 was played on a screen.

The devotion to Saint George is very strong in the city where it rivals in popularity with its other state and city patron, Saint Sebastian.

It also represents "Ogum," an entity of the Candomble and Umbanda worshippers who believe it gives them strength and protection against all evil.
