STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Filipinos, some openly weeping, gathered for a mass at Manila Cathedral Tuesday to bid farewell to the late Pope Francis.
He will be remembered in the Philippines for his outreach to the poor and victims of natural disasters, which often devastate the country.
“I was surprised that the Pope died. At first I was stunned and then I was sad, very sad, and tears flowed from the loss of our beloved Pope," said Cynthia Esquilona, a 50-year-old mother of two who lit a candle and prayed before a portrait of Francis at the cathedral.
Francis visited the Philippines, a Catholic bastion in Asia, in early 2015 to console survivors of Typhoon Haiyan, which left thousands of people dead.
His image from that time, rain-soaked but constantly waving and blowing kisses to crowds of typhoon survivors, had endured.
