STORYLINE:
LEAD IN:
Pope Francis took his name from Saint Francis of Assisi – known to his followers for embracing poverty and simplicity.
The 13th century friar’s place of birth has become a place of pilgrimage.
STORYLINE:
Pilgrims flock to Assisi, an Umbrian hill town and the birthplace of St Francis.
The saint is revered for his decision to renounce a wealthy lifestyle to found the Franciscan order of friars in 1209.
Saint Francis of Assisi embraced a life of poverty and simplicity and often went out in the countryside to preach a message of joy and peace to the rural poor.
This history inspired the late Pope Francis.
Before he took the highest position in the Catholic church in 2013, the Argentine Jesuit was called Jorge Bergoglio.
Speaking in February this year, Franciscan friar Fra’ Giulio Cesareo said that he was amazed when the new Pope announced that he would be known as Francis: "Twelve years when Pope Francis on the balcony of St Peter’s Square announced his name as Francis, I was in Rome I was watching the TV and I was speechless, really speechless. I would never imagined that Francis would become the name of the shepherd of the church".
The pope said in the first days of his pontificate that he chose to name himself after St. Francis because he wanted a “poor church, and for the poor”.
Pope Francis died on Easter Monday at the age of 88.
The Vatican said that he suffered a stroke that led to a coma and caused his heart to fail.
The funeral will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Peter’s Square.
In his will, Francis asked to be buried in a simple underground tomb at St. Mary Major Basilica, home to Francis’ favourite icon of the Virgin Mary, to whom he was particularly devoted.
