“The exhibition ‘Brother Sun and Sister Moon’, as the title says it was born out of the occasion of celebrating the eighth centenary of the composition of the “Canticle of Creatures” by St. Francis of Assisi and that is the reason why we start precisely from 1300, our analysis of how the relationship with nature changes, because Francis for the first time, let’s say, introduced the idea of ‘you’ to creation and so it happens also in sculpture and paintings in which the gaze of artists, precisely in that era, becomes much more attentive, much more concentrated, even with extraordinarily realistic works. From here starts an itinerary that for five centuries analyses how the representation of how nature changes because of how men’s perception changes towards animals, plants, the sea, the stars that always have a different role.”

“The Canticle of the Creatures is the starting point of this exhibition path, also in terms of scientific reflection on our part because art’s interest in nature begins exactly at the moment when Francis composed the Canticle of the Creatures and is matched and married to a truly epochal cultural and social transformation, which is what happens between the 12th and 13th centuries, when we stop looking to the supernatural, when people stop looking to heaven as the only desirable dimension, and turn their gaze back to what is around us.”
