++PART COVERED++
"Today we have actually increased our efforts, working with the same scanning methods if we are moving at sea: a jet ski, a boat and a unique means of scanning under the surface of the water, both underwater detectors and of course swimming in a fairly safe area, almost 400 meters from the point where we are here to the south. Swimmers are trying to rescue the victim. This is a complex incident because there is a strong current flowing from south to north, which increases our search range. I think it is very important to convey the guidelines and recommendations: never enter an area that is not regulated by rescue services. In the end, if you don’t see the lifeguard, the lifeguard certainly doesn’t see you. And certainly when you enter areas with sharks. Sharks are ultimately a war machine, not a pet, and you need to recognize that and be careful accordingly."

STORYLINE:
Israeli police on Tuesday continued to search the waters off the country’s Mediterranean coast for a swimmer who they fear may have been attacked by a shark.

The area has for decades seen close encounters between the marine predator and beachgoers.

The presence of mainly endangered dusky and sandbar sharks has been attracting onlookers eager to get up close with the sharks.

Conservation groups have been urging authorities to take steps to separate people from the animals, but say those warnings went unheeded.

Police launched their search for the missing swimmer on Monday after they received reports that he was attacked by a shark on a beach near the Israeli city of Hadera.

Shark attacks in Israel are rare, and this would be just the third recorded one, according to the head of the marine ranger force of Israel’s Parks and Nature Authority.

One of those attacks, in the 1940s, was deadly.

On Tuesday, the beach was closed off as search teams scoured the sea by boat and underwater equipment.

The area, where warm water released by a nearby power plant flows into the sea, has for years attracted dozens of sharks between the months of October and May.

The head of the marine ranger force said swimming was normally prohibited in the area, but swimmers usually entered the waters regardless.

Israelis flocked in large numbers to the beach during their weeklong Passover holiday.

They shared the waters with a dozen or more sharks and some were witnessed tugging on the sharks’ fins or feeding them.

Videos showed a shark swimming right up to bathers in thigh-deep water.
