STORYLINE:
A mass to honor Pope Francis’ life was held Monday night at the Virgen de Caacupé Parish in Buenos Aires, where the pontiff began his pastoral mission as Jorge Mario Bergoglio.

Located in the heart of the impoverished Barrio 21, it was in this neighborhood that Francis carried out his work with Argentina’s most vulnerable communities, building his legacy of humility, inclusion, and service.

The parishioners, including longtime residents, youth groups, and religious leaders, gathered to pay tribute to the Pope not only as a global religious figure but as a local guide who transformed lives through compassion and faith.

“He was such a deeply positive leader for us—he left us a beacon, a light to guide our path,” said Matías Gutiérrez, a Boy Scout from the parish.

The mass was filled with music, prayer, and strong emotions, as the community came together to remember a spiritual leader they still consider one of their own.

Pope Francis died Monday at age 88. The Vatican said Francis suffered a stroke which led to a coma and his heart to fail, as he recovered from a five-week hospitalization for double pneumonia.

History’s first Latin American pontiff charmed the world with his humble style and concern for the poor but alienated many conservatives with critiques of capitalism and climate change.

Francis recently returned to the Vatican after 38 days in a hospital for a respiratory crisis that developed into double pneumonia, the longest hospitalization of his 12-year papacy.

He last appeared in public on Sunday with an Easter blessing and popemobile tour through a cheering crowd in St. Peter’s Square. No funeral date has been announced.

The next pope is yet to be decided.
