STORYLINE:
Visitors to Vatican City expressed their sadness at the passing of Pope Francis on Tuesday, as officials announced that history’s first Latin American pontiff would be laid to rest on Saturday after lying in state for three days in St. Peter’s Basilica.
The cardinals met on Tuesday in the Vatican’s synod hall to chart the next steps before a conclave begins to choose Francis’ successor, as condolences poured in from mourners across the city and around the world.
“For me he was the people’s Pope, even for those who are not Catholic, he managed to touch their hearts with his approach and his way of getting close to them,” Rev. Benjamin Nambi, a visitor from Malawi, told the Associated Press.
Another visitor from Argentina, who gave only his first name Marcelo, described the emotion of being in Vatican City at the time of the pope’s death.
“We didn’t know we were coming here for this, we just came as tourists, to take a tour and to get to know the place. By chance we learned that Bergoglio died – this is how we call him in Argentina—it is very hard. He gave hope to everyone,” he said.
The cardinals set the funeral for Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Peter’s Square, to be celebrated by the dean of the College of Cardinals, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re.
The Argentine pope died on Monday at age 88 after a stroke put him in a coma and led his heart to fail.
He had been recovering in his apartment after being hospitalized for five weeks with pneumonia.
