STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Catholic devotees in the war-torn nation of Myanmar on Tuesday gathered for a memorial Mass for Pope Francis at the country’s biggest church in Yangon, where he visited in late 2017.
The Argentine pope died Monday at age 88 after a stroke put him in a coma and led his heart to fail.
He had been recovering in his apartment after being hospitalized for five weeks with pneumonia.
As the sun set in Yangon, the faithful prayed in memory of the late pontiff at St Mary’s Cathedral, which is more than a century old.
Cardinal Charles Bo, Archbishop of Yangon, led the service.
Catholics are one of the smallest religious minority groups in Myanmar, which is predominantly Buddhist.
There are about 700,000 Catholics, just over 1% of the population of more than 51 million.
Christians make up about 6% of the total population.
Some items associated with the papal visit, more than seven years ago, were displayed at the church entrance, including the bed, pillow and chair used by the pontiff.
