“I was in Rome privately, I had a chance to see him (the Pope) after his Easter message. It was really obvious that he was in a difficult health condition. But nevertheless, there was warmth, joy and the wish from him that he fulfil his mission to the very end. It was a great pleasure for me, as well as my wife and kids. The kids felt it especially. Just for public information, that meeting happened at the initiative of Vatican protocol, not ours, we were there privately and we really did not want to burden the Pope. But as I was highest highest-ranking official there on that day, we got the invitation and we accepted it gladly.”
3. Milanovic and Plenkovic talking
STORYLINE:
Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic was among the last people to meet with Pope Francis before he passed away on Monday, aged 88.
Plenkovic and his family had a private audience with the pontiff after they attended Easter Sunday service at St Peter’s Square.
Speaking on Tuesday, the prime minister said the pope had clearly looked unwell, but added that "nevertheless, there was warmth, joy and the wish from him that he fulfils his mission to the very end".
He clarified that he and his family had been on a private visit to Rome and had been invited by the Vatican to meet the pope.
Plenkovic was speaking as he attended a commemoration ceremony for victims of the Nazi concentration camp Jasenovac.
