STORYLINE:
Visitors to London’s Westminster Cathedral, the mother church for Roman Catholics in England and Wales, gave their reactions to news that Pope Francis had died earlier on Monday.

"I think he was wonderful. His simplicity, his kindness, his care of people," local resident, Jackie Keep, said.

"I love the fact that he lived in the hostel and didn’t want to sleep in all the smart places that they gave him and that he was a very simple man," she added.

Visiting from Hong Kong, Salina Lau, echoed praise for Pope Francis, "who always taught us benevolence, universal love to the others."

Xhevat Ademi, a visitor from Kosovo, said the pontiff "stood up for peace".

"He was a great supporter of people who experienced war particularly, and people who experienced injustice, and injustices of all kinds," he added.

The death of Francis was announced by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Irish-born Vatican camerlengo, a position that will be important in the coming weeks as he takes charge of the administration of the Holy See until a new pope is elected.

Farrell made the announcement at 9:47 a.m., just over two hours after Francis had died.

Farrell spoke from Domus Santa Marta, the apartment on Vatican grounds where Francis lived and where he had returned to recover less than a month after being hospitalized for double pneumonia.
