"This has been an incredibly busy day for the Camerlengo. That job is currently held by Cardinal Kevin Farrell. He’s an Irish-born American. Pope Francis made him the Camerlengo a few years ago in a sign that he really trusts him. Cardinal Farrell had the job this morning to announce the death. At about 9.45 in the morning, he went into the chapel of the Santa Marta Hotel where Pope Francis lived and announced that he had died at 7.35 in the morning. This afternoon, he is now confirming the death that is part of the new rites and rituals that Pope Francis approved last year to outline the process that now will take place before he is buried. In that job, Cardinal Farrell will confirm the death, and then when it’s time to bring the body into the Basilica, Cardinal Farrell, will lead the procession, and he will then preside over some of the rituals before burial."

STORYLINE:
An Irish-born American cardinal was entrusted by Pope Francis to be the camerlengo, the Vatican official who runs the Holy See after the death of one pontiff and before the election of another.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell was the person who certified the pope’s death, sealed the papal apartment, broke the pope’s fisherman’s ring and announced his death.
Farrell will lead the procession accompanying the pope’s coffin into St. Peter’s Basilica and preside over the burial.
Separately, he will receive written reports from Vatican offices about their current assets; a copy of the current and projected budget for the Holy See; and any other information from the Vatican’s economic ministry that would be useful for cardinals and the future pope.
He and the dean of the College of Cardinals, Italian Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, then play key roles organizing the meetings of cardinals preceding the conclave.
