STORYLINE:
Tourists gathered at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on Monday to pay their respects following the death of Pope Francis.

The pontiff, who died at the age of 88, was remembered with solemnity and reverence by visitors from around the world.

"Well, it was a shock to have it confirmed, but I mean, I think most people knew he was in poor health," said Robert Popovic, a tourist from Australia.

"It’s a shock. It’s sad," he added.

In honor of the late pontiff, the bells of Notre Dame rang 88 times, symbolizing each year of his life.

Prayers and masses were scheduled throughout the day, with Father Dufour leading a morning service.

"This thanksgiving has a special character, brothers and sisters," he said. "As our Pope has just returned to the Father’s house, we are invited, all of us. And that’s why we’re here this morning. We are invited to entrust him to God’s mercy."

An evening mass is scheduled for 6 pm local time, followed by a vigil, as the cathedral continues to serve as a place of reflection and remembrance for Pope Francis.
