"We are torn between grief at the death of the Supreme Pontiff and at the same time hope, the hope that comes from the feast of Easter that we celebrated just 48 hours ago. Pope Francis was a man of hope. He never stopped saying that there was hope possible for mankind and that mankind was invited to fight to build this better world, which he never stopped promoting, to build peace, which he never stopped announcing. And this man of hope is dying. The day after we celebrated Christ’s victory over death, this is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful days to die, and I am sure that the risen Christ is called to welcome him into his kingdom."

7. SOUNDBITE (French) Olivier Ribadeau Dumas, Notre Dame’s rector:
"There are many aspects that can be remembered about Pope Francis. But I believe the first thing is that he is the pope of the poor. He is the one who invited us to live the Gospel in its radical form. When he spoke of the peripheries, he was speaking of those who are excluded, whoever they may be, whether it be the elderly whom he mentioned with a culture of waste regarding them, whether it be unborn children, or whether it be migrants. Let us not forget that his first trip in Italy was to Lampedusa, to go for the reception of the poorest."

9. SOUNDBITE (French) Olivier Ribadeau Dumas, Rector of Notre Dame of Paris:
"But Pope Francis is also the Pope of the Universal. He has travelled the countries to respond to what the Apostle, what Jesus said to the Apostle St Peter, “Strengthen your brothers in the faith”. He’s been to Mongolia, he’s been to East Timor, he’s been to many countries that no pope has ever been to, precisely to support the Christians there."

STORYLINE:
The Rector of Notre-Dame Cathedral, Monsignor Olivier Ribadeau-Dumas, paid tribute to Pope Francis on Monday, just before celebrating a memorial Mass in his honour, describing the late pontiff as a tireless messenger of hope and peace.
“We are torn between grief at the death of the Supreme Pontiff and, at the same time, hope — the hope that comes from the feast of Easter that we celebrated just 48 hours ago,” said Ribadeau-Dumas in a solemn address.
The rector evoked the symbolic timing of the pope’s passing, which came in the immediate wake of Easter celebrations, saying it imbued the moment with profound spiritual meaning.
“The day after we celebrated Christ’s victory over death, this is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful days to die, and I am sure that the risen Christ is called to welcome him into his kingdom,” he added.
