“I think one great man has left us. One great man of church, God and the people. This is hard for us. We feel very sorry. I believe he will pray for us from paradise, in the same way that he prayed for us on earth. He was working for everyone, poor or rich. He never made any difference to nations, race… he loved his people and people loved him. I think we lost one great man. And the Pope as well – leader of the church.”

9. SOUNDBITE (Croatian) Damir Kobojevic, resident of Zagreb:
“I am extremely sorry. When I first received the news that Pope is not feeling well, when he was ill – I came here (to the cathedral) and I prayed for his well being. Same as many of us in Zagreb. This news today really surprised me, he was only yesterday at St Peter’s square in Vatican greeting the faithful and others who were close to him. I am really sorry, he was one special Pope, he had special feelings for poor people. He was not that kind of Pope that looks to us from above, he was down on earth with us. He visited Sarajevo, the city where I was born, it’s the place where Catholics are a minority, but he gave a special feeling to those live there, to feel that closeness. That’s why I’m really sorry he died.”

STORYLINE:
Mourners gathered around the Catholic Cathedral in Zagreb, the Croatian capital, on Monday as news of the Pope’s death reached the faithful.

Pope Francis, history’s first Latin American pontiff who charmed the world with his humble style and concern for the poor but alienated conservatives with critiques of capitalism and climate change, died Monday. He was 88.

Despite the renovation works on the cathedral and locked doors, believers flocked to the square to pray for the soul of Pope Francis.

Many in Croatia saw the Pope as someone who did not "look to us from above" but "was down on earth with us," helped the poor and saw no difference between nationalities and races around the world, residents said.

Churches in Croatia will hold a special prayer at 1800GMT on Monday to mourn the death of Pope Francis.
