“Thousands of people gathered here in St. Peter’s Square this evening to say a rosary prayer in honor of 88-year-old Pope Francis who died at 7:35 this morning Rome time. This evening the Vatican released a statement about how he died. It was a stroke that caused a coma and then led to heart failure. They also released his final testament in which he said he wants to be buried at the St. Mary Major Basilica in Rome, not here at the Vatican where other popes are buried. Pope Francis was last seen in public on Easter Sunday when he came out on the balcony, the same balcony that he emerged on when he was elected pope. But on Easter Sunday, he was in a wheelchair and very frail. He did manage to bless the crowd. And wish them a Happy Easter. After that, he did something typical of Pope Francis, he got in the Pope Mobile and went around and greeted the people in St. Peter’s Square. Pope Francis has always enjoyed being close to the people. The Cardinals are starting to come into Rome and they will have tomorrow their first meeting. The funeral is likely to be by the end of the week. After the funeral, there are the novendiales, which are the nine days of mourning. After the novendiales, they can select a date for the conclave to choose the next pope."

STORYLINE:
Pope Francis, history’s first Latin American pontiff who charmed the world with his humble style and concern for the poor but alienated conservatives with critiques of capitalism and climate change, died Monday. He was 88.
The Vatican said Francis suffered a stroke which led to a coma and his heart to fail, as he recovered from a five-week hospitalization for double pneumonia.
Bells tolled in Catholic churches from his native Argentina to the Philippines and across Rome as news spread around the world.
Francis, who suffered from chronic lung disease and had part of one lung removed as a young man, was admitted to Gemelli hospital on Feb. 14, 2025, for a respiratory crisis that developed into double pneumonia. He spent 38 days there, the longest hospitalization of his 12-year papacy.
