“Great sorrow. He showed us that God is a Father who is looking out for us, ready to receive us whenever we’re ready. Always looking out for us.”

“He, without a doubt, was the most inclusive Pope I think we’ve ever had. And he brought into the perspective of the world about Christianity, its true meaning. And I thought as a Jesuit as well, he brought the intellectual tradition of the order to the world. He admitted things when they weren’t correct. He was freely, he spoke about the inconsistencies and the difficulties of the church very openly. An incredibly humble man.”
5. Morning Mass, parishioners, priest
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael Gerstner, St. Ignatius Loyola Parishioner:

“When I woke up this morning, I heard about his passing. The news is very sad to hear. Though it’s kind of marvelous he went home to be with God just as we celebrated Easter. So, there’s a certain beauty in his passing on that date, even though we’re very sad to lose him here on Earth.”

“Well, I think the thing that stands out to everyone about Pope Francis is probably just his graciousness and openness to so many people in the world.”

“Well, I mean, I think it’s marvelous that they had a Jesuit Pope, but I think he was really a Pope for everyone. So, I just think we were very sad that he passed away this morning. We know his health was not the greatest. And I thought it was wonderful that he could make it out to the balcony to greet the people yesterday. You could tell it was a struggle for him.”

STORYLINE:
Pope Francis, history’s first Latin American pontiff who charmed the world with his humble style and concern for the poor but alienated conservatives with critiques of capitalism and climate change, died Monday. He was 88.
Many recalled his legacy as the first pope from Latin America, and the first Jesuit to reach the pinnacle of church hierarchy, one who stressed humility over hubris for a Church beset with scandal and indifference.
Parishioners at St. Ignatius Loyola, a Jesuit parish in New York City, remembered Francis as being "inclusive" and "unique."
“He, without a doubt, was the most inclusive Pope I think we’ve ever had," Tim Croak, attending Easter Monday Mass at St. Ignatius Loyola, said. "I thought as a Jesuit he brought the intellectual tradition of the order to the world."
Croak said, Francis "admitted things when they weren’t correct… he spoke about the inconsistencies and the difficulties of the church very openly."
The Vatican announced that Francis, the 266th pope, died Monday morning — a day after his last public appearance on Easter Sunday to bless thousands of people in St. Peter’s Square.
He made his last public appearance on Easter Sunday — a day before his death — to bless thousands of people in St. Peter’s Square, drawing wild cheers and applause.
