Tributes to Pope Francis have poured in from the West Bank city of Bethlehem on Monday after the Vatican announced the pontiff’s death at age 88.

Anton Salman, Mayor of Bethlehem, said he had heard the news with "deep sorrow."

The Pope was one of the world leaders supporting the Palestinian cause with clear and explicit positions," he said.

Zain Mabouk, a resident from Nazareth, called him a "messenger of God."

"He was a good man, he was a person who wanted peace."

The Vatican said Francis died at 7:35 a.m. Monday.

He had suffered from chronic lung disease and had part of one lung removed as a young man.
