"The patient is supposed to be on dialysis for three sessions per week, each lasting four hours, meaning the total average per week is 12 hours. However, because of the increase in the number of patients and the shortage of available devices, we are doing two sessions instead of three, and three hours instead of four hours. This of course leads to complications such as increased levels of toxins, fluid accumulation in the lungs and heart, and high levels of potassium, which may lead to death."

5. Various of Attiya’s son pushing wheelchair into tent
6. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mohamed Attiya, a kidney failure patient: ++SOUNDBITE STARTS ON PREVIOUS SHOT AND IS OVERLAID BY SHOT7
"In the past, we used to do dialysis three times a week, for four full hours. It was forbidden to do less than four hours. In the war, we were forced to do dialysis for two hours, and sometimes for an hour and a half. Just what would get you from death to life, that is, just enough to enable you to breathe until the next time."

STORYLINE:
Mohamed Attiya, a kidney failure patient, is pushed by his son on a wheelchair through the destroyed streets of Gaza City to the Shifa hospital in the northern Rimal neighborhood.

The father of six receives two dialysis sessions a week at the hospital, and each session is two to three hours long. But that is not enough.

Attiya is one of more than 680 kidney failure patients currently in Gaza Strip whose health deteriorated since the war between Hamas and Israel started on October 7, 2023.

Dr. Ghazi al-Yazigi, head of the Nephrology and Dialysis department at the Shifa hospital, said hospitals have been forced to limit dialysis sessions to two every week for every patient, down from three or four sessions before the war.

“This leads to complications such as increased levels of toxins and fluid accumulation, which could lead to death,” he said.

For patients like Attiya, the last year and a half have been devastating. Attiya was displaced more than six times since he was forced to flee his home in the Om Naser village near the northern town of Beit Hanoun in the first weeks of the war, and currently lives in a temporary shelter.

“For a long time I have been suffering a lot, there is no transportation, the streets are ruined, life is difficult, life is expensive, transportation is expensive if it even exists,” he said.
