STORYLINE:
Mexican faithful gathered Monday at the largest Marian shrine in the world, the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, to mourn the death of Pope Francis. He was history’s first Latin American pontiff.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum labelled the death of Pope Francis on Monday a "painful loss."

"Pope Francis was a humanist, a man who was always close to the humblest, to the poor," she told a news conference in Mexico City.

Pope Francis charmed the world with his humble style and concern for the poor but alienated conservatives with critiques of capitalism and climate change. He died Monday at the age of 88.

He visited the Basilica for the first time in 2016 with throngs of faithfuls welcoming him as he celebrated his first Mass at the shrine during the trip.

One of his biggest desires was to visit the Basilica and sit before the image of "Our Lady of Guadalupe."
