STORYLINE:
Flags were lowered to half-staff on government buildings in Rome on Monday following the death of Pope Francis.
The pontiff passed away earlier in the day, at the age of 88.
Bells tolled in church towers across Italy as the overwhelmingly Roman Catholic country mourned the death of Francis.
