STORYLINE:
Churches in the Philippines, the largest Roman Catholic nation in Asia, rang their bells Monday to mourn the death of Pope Francis, who visited the country in 2015.

Many attended Mass on Monday evening to offer special prayers for Francis.

"When he became Pope we were all awed by how humble he was and he continued humble throughout his ministry," said Elizabeth Sendin, a worker at a church in Manila.

One churchgoer said that although she was sad she could tell Francis’s time had come.

"I think this is a decision by God calling him back so that he may already be free from all the pains that he is suffering," said Olivia Flores.

Francis was history’s first Latin American pontiff who charmed the world with his humble style and concern for the poor but alienated conservatives with critiques of capitalism and climate change.

Bells tolled in church towers across Rome after the announcement, which was read out by Cardinal Kevin Farrell from the chapel of the Domus Santa Marta, where Francis lived.

Francis, who suffered from chronic lung disease and had part of one lung removed as a young man, was admitted to Gemelli hospital on Feb. 14, 2025, for a respiratory crisis that developed into double pneumonia. He spent 38 days there, the longest hospitalization of his 12-year papacy.
