STORYLINE:
Christians in the war-wrecked Syrian city of Aleppo were mourning Pope Francis on Monday, after his death was announced earlier in the day.

“We are very happy for him because he has now gone to a place that he desired, we hope (he) will be next to Jesus Christ," said one Christian resident, Mary Soul.

She said she hoped whoever becomes the next pontiff will be "as competent, as affectionate, and as loving” as Francis.

"The Pope was a good person who wanted peace. He represented a large portion of Christians, he stood against war and against violence,” another Christian resident said.

Pope Francis, who was history’s first Latin American pontiff, charmed the world with his humble style and concern for the poor, but alienated conservatives with critiques of capitalism and climate change.

He died aged 88.

He made his last public appearance on Easter Sunday – a day before his death – to bless thousands of people in St. Peter’s Square, drawing wild cheers and applause.

Francis performed the blessing from the same loggia where he was introduced to the world on March 13, 2013 as the 266th pope.
