STORYLINE:
Catholics in Bulgaria’s capital Sofia mourned the death of Pope Francis on Monday.
Monsignor Rumen Stanev said Francis "had a profound affinity for those who are marginalized and abandoned."
"Like Jesus in the Gospels, he walked among sinners, the outcast, and the weak."
Stamen Penev, a member of the congregation, said, "he reminds us that our actions and the way we relate to others should come first and words follow."
The Vatican said Francis died at 7:35 a.m. Monday.
He had suffered from chronic lung disease and had part of one lung removed as a young man.
Francis was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Feb. 14, 2025 for a respiratory crisis that developed into double pneumonia.
He spent 38 days there, the longest hospitalization of his 12-year papacy.
