"Argentina woke up in shock this morning to the news that Pope Francis had died and struggled to come to terms with what this meant not only for the Roman Catholic Church , but also for this country where Pope Francis was born, raised, and served as archbishop. All over Buenos Aires, people were lighting candles, saying prayers, and taking time out of their mornings to remember the man who, before becoming Pope Francis was Jorge Bergoglio, born to Italian immigrants in the middle class neighborhood of Flores, in the Argentine capital. Actually here we’re in front of the church where Bergoglio discovered his faith as a teenager just down the road from his house.

"Feelings overall among Argentines about Pope Francis are mixed and like many things in this country, divided along political lines because Pope Francis was sympathetic to social justice causes, he was seen here as widely aligned with left wing leaders, in this country now governed by a far right economist Javier Milei. But overall, even as radio shows debated why Pope Francis never came to Argentina and what his politics really were, the feeling prevailing here is one of grief and sorrow."

STORYLINE:
Pope Francis, history’s first Latin American pontiff who charmed the world with his humble style and concern for the poor but alienated conservatives with critiques of capitalism and climate change, died Monday. He was 88.

Bells tolled in churches in his native Argentina and across Rome as news spread around the world after the announcement, which was read by Cardinal Kevin Farrell from the chapel of the Domus Santa Marta, where Francis lived.

“At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of his Church,” said Farrell, the Vatican camerlengo, who takes charge after a pontiff’s death.

Francis, who suffered from chronic lung disease and had part of one lung removed as a young man, was admitted to Gemelli hospital on Feb. 14, 2025, for a respiratory crisis that developed into double pneumonia. He spent 38 days there, the longest hospitalization of his 12-year papacy.

He made his last public appearance on Easter Sunday — a day before his death — to bless thousands of people in St. Peter’s Square, drawing wild cheers and applause. Beforehand, he met briefly with U.S. Vice President JD Vance.
