4. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Suleiman Khalil, wounded by a landmine:
"I work as a freelance worker, picking olives and wild cherries. After the liberation of the area, we went to pick olives and collect metals. I went with two of my friends to pick olives, we did not know that there were mines on the ground, when we entered, we saw the mines. We tried to get out, but the first mine exploded. Then I tried to save myself. I started crawling then the second land mine exploded. There was a young man from Dadikh village called Faisal Mohammed who saved me. He called the civil defence, then the civil defence came and rescued me. They took me to Binnish Hospital and there in Binnish Hospital they took x-rays and operated on me. This leg was injured and the second was amputated."

"I hope to get a prosthetic limb and start my life again. I am engaged and I have a future, so I will go back to work, help the family and help my parents. I hope, God willing, I will get a prosthetic limb."

12. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Salah Sweid, brother of deminer Mohammad Sweid (killed while working to deactivate an ordnance):
"Until the liberation (fall of Bashar Assad), people were returning to their villages, mines were exploding, and people were being martyred in their lands. They asked him (Mohammad) to come to the village and help them in this matter. But like any mother in Syria, my mother was afraid for her son and warned him not to go. Even the relatives, the uncles, were concerned about him like everyone else, but he told them "if I do not go and others do the same, who would go? Every day someone is dying." So, he trusted God and went. When he was demining in an area called Tal Risha, there was a spider mine, they planted another mine underneath the mine and while they were demining it, it exploded."

16. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ahmed Jomaa, member of the "Demining Unit 52" with the Syrian forces:
"The former regime left behind a large number of mines. These mines have caused civilian casualties and material losses. There have been human losses in these areas. Two or three days ago, a tractor exploded in these areas and a number of (people got their) legs amputated in this area. We, as engineering teams in this place, are working as hard as we can to rescue the civilians from the mines that are there.”
