"There are many things in this exhibition, but they all are quite rooted in Pakistan. But when they came out of the context of that city and being displayed here in the city of – in Dubai, it looks like that it has a very strong ability to speak with the global audience. And it’s – the way it’s working here, the way it’s bridging the other contemporary artwork, I think that is quite (an) exciting and fascinating thing."

"There are different body of works in this exhibition. There’s a monumental scale, big installation, site-specific installation, which is done with the traditional technique of the bed-weaving in Pakistan. Then there is my photography done with my cell phone camera. Then there are miniature paintings. Then there are video installations as well."

14. SOUNDBITE (English) Nada Raza, the cultural advisor of Alserkal Arts Foundation:
"We have an overall thematic this year, ‘Wild Stitch’, which is inspired by the idea that in embroidery, particularly in ‘tatriz’ embroidery, which is Palestinian embroidery, women would often make an imperfect stitch. And the concept behind that was of course, you know, sometimes it can be an accident. But also, to say that only God can make perfection, that humans have to have a bit of a margin of error. So that’s the concept of Wild Stitch, under which everything has come together for Alserkal Art Week."

17. SOUNDBITE (English) Fatos Ustek, public art curator:
"Public art commissions have become more important in today’s world where it takes away the mediated encounter between a work of art and its audience in a way that you can actually stumble upon the artworks when you come to the avenue for meeting a friend, or buying a book, or attending a class or seeing exhibitions in the gallery spaces. So, what happens in the public spaces then is that unexpected encounter that perhaps might give resources to surprise, sensations of awe, curiosity and engagement."

STORYLINE:
An art show in Dubai has explored themes such as identity, displacement and even, imperfection over the past week.

Alserkal Art Week is running under the theme, "A Wild Stich," which refers to an imperfect stich in embroidery.

The cultural advisor of Alserkal Arts Foundation, Nada Raza, said a wrong stich can be the result of a mistake, but it can also carry a much deeper message.

"Women would often make an imperfect stitch. And the concept behind that was of course, you know, sometimes it can be an accident. But also, to say that only God can make perfection, that humans have to have a bit of a margin of error," Raza said.
