STORYLINE:
Faithful and residents of one of Rio de Janeiro’s largest groups of favelas gathered to follow the Good Friday procession through the narrow streets of the Alemão Complex.
A local theatre group, that has been presenting the Via Crucis for more than 20 years, enacted the last moments of Jesus Christ from his trial with Pontius Pilate to his crucifixion.
Many people followed the reenactment of Jesus carrying a cross, through the favela alleys, some were visibly emotional.
“It’s very important because we’re able to evangelize a lot of people. Every year many people come to watch, they’re moved and they’re able to understand the meaning of Christ’s passion, Good Friday, Holy Week, the sacrifice that Jesus made for us,” said resident Tatiane Rodrigues while watching the play with her son.
Good Friday is part of the Christian Holy Week, which ends with Easter Sunday, when Christians celebrate Christ’s resurrection from the dead.
