"When you’re trying to get an attorney to help you and represent you and be in these places that are so remote and so out of the way, it makes it really difficult. And so a lot of people are not represented. You end up having this incredibly low representation rate in these detention centers in central Louisiana partially because they are so remote and people don’t, attorneys don’t want to necessarily go there or deal with it."

"If we were to get rid of private prisons as the places that run these locations then you would end up with a completely different system because the incentive would not be to make money and detain people for as long as possible and provide them with as little care as needs necessary in order to keep on making money off of it, instead you’d end up with a system where, you know people are sure, they’re being detained but the purpose of that detention is not necessarily profit."

STORYLINE:
The world’s largest immigration detention system is on the cusp of explosive growth from its current as President Donald Trump pursues his signature campaign promise of mass deportations, representing a potential bonanza for private prison companies.
This month, ICE published a request for bids to operate detention centers for up to $45 billion.
Louisiana emerged as a hub for immigration detention during Trump’s first term and is second only to Texas in bed space.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement was drawn to Louisiana in part by relatively low labor costs and conservative courts but critics complain of isolation.
