STORYLINE:
It poured marshmallows at a Detroit-area park Friday as kids rushed to collect thousands of the gooey treats that were dropped from a helicopter.
The annual Great Marshmallow Drop took place at Worden Park in Royal Oak, Michigan, and was hosted by Oakland County Parks.
Hundreds of children waved and cheered as the helicopter passed by on its way to the drop zone. Once there, a passenger unloaded the treats out of a sack and onto the grass below.
“The Great Marshmallow Drop has been going on for over 30 years. We do it, because it’s great for community engagement,” Oakland County recreation program supervisor Melissa Nawrocki said. “The kids love it. The looks on their faces as they’re picking up their marshmallow and turning in the marshmallow for prizes is great. And it’s just a fun event.”
The helicopter made four passes, dropping marshmallows for kids in three age categories: 4-year-olds and younger; 5-7-year-olds and those 8 to 12 years old.
A drop for those of all ages with disabilities came later in the day.
Nawrocki said the copters were to drop 15,000 marshmallows in all.
Children exchanged their marshmallows at a nearby station for a prize bag that included a water park pass and a kite.
Toddler Georgia Mason had little difficulty procuring a marshmallow at her first Drop, said her dad, Matt.
“Probably the most exciting part was seeing the helicopters. But once we saw the marshmallows drop, we got really excited,” Matt Mason said.
“And, yeah, we joined the melee. We managed to get one pretty easy.”
