"Beyond the artistic carving and beauty of this image, it represents the spiritual life and the sufferings of all of us. For that cross he carries is also our cross. Each of us carries a cross, and seeing him there is also teaching us to carry a cross, which are our sins, sufferings, difficult circumstances, because in it we die. But we do not stay there, instead we resurrect. We rise with him on Holy Saturday of the Easter Vigil."

STORYLINE:
Thousands of devotees on Wednesday attended the traditional procession of the Nazarene of St. Paul, which departs from the Basilica Santa Teresa in Caracas, Venezuela.

An image of Jesus carrying a cross adorned with weaved flowers is carried on shoulders by a select few, wearing bright purple clothing.

Those attending the rite intend to fulfill their promises when praying or to thank God for favors granted.

Dressed in purple robes, many walked barefoot as a sign of penance, accompanying the life-sized statue of Jesus bearing the cross through the streets of downtown Caracas surrounding the Basilica of St. Teresa.

The procession, which dates back to the 17th century, is one of the most significant religious events in the country.
