STORYLINE:
The Czech prime minister said on Thursday that the country had boosted its energy security by completing a project to reduce its dependence on oil deliveries from Russia.
"In January, construction works on the TAL pipeline were successfully completed, and yesterday, the first increased supplies of non-Russian oil for our refineries arrived here at the Nelahozeves tank storage site via this pipeline," said Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala.
The Czech Republic previously received about half of its oil – or four million metric tons – from Russia through the Druhzba pipeline.
But Fiala said the Russian imports were no longer necessary.
"For the first time in history, the Czech Republic is fully supplied with non-Russian oil and fully supplied by the Western route," he added.
Czech Finance Minister Zbyněk Stanjura called it "Oil Independence Day for the Czech Republic."
"It is good that we have made this investment," he added.
The Czechs have invested over 1.5 billion Czech koruna or crowns (US$61 million) to double the capacity of the Italian TAL pipeline to eight million metric tons a year.
A branch of the pipeline, which continues as IKL through Germany, serves the Czech Republic, or Czechia. The amount of oil imported will fully cover the country’s needs.
The Czech Republic stopped importing Russian gas earlier this year.
