STORYLINE:
Israeli tanks, Armoured Personnel Carriers and troops moved in Thursday on the home of a senior Palestinian leader in the West Bank town of Ramallah.
The goal was to arrest Marwan Barghouti, the leader Arafat’s mainstream Fatah faction, known as the Tanzim, who Israel considers a mastermind behind the current intifada.
Barghouti was not present.
His wife and children were, however, inside the apartment.
They emerged unharmed.
Leaning through a window, Barghouti’s wife said Israeli soldiers had stormed into the apartment, searched the home and ordered the family to stay in one room.
The soldiers told her they would remain in the apartment until they found Barghouti.
Thursday’s action came as part of a coordinated Israeli operation across the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Israeli officials said these were ‘security measures’ taken in response to Palestinian attacks.
