STORYLINE:
Indigenous leaders and activists performed a symbolic act outside Brazil’s Itamaraty Palace, sprinkling ashes from fires in the Amazon, to pressure leaders towards a just energy transition and the phase-out of fossil fuels at the center of COP30 discussions.

“This banner, this cry, only symbolizes a global request for Brazil,” said Mundano, a well-known art activist. “For a long time, we’ve been a reference in relatively clean and renewable energy, like hydroelectric power. Now, we have the opportunity to lead by example in this urgent COP30 transition.”

The demonstration brought together Indigenous representatives from several countries, including Papua New Guinea and Ghana, amplifying the call for global climate justice.

Portia Adu-Mensah, national coordinator of 350 Ghana Reducing Carbon, took part in the demonstration.

“Community matters, and we need to put community women at the front line for a just energy transition,” said Portia Adu-Mensah.

Standing in solidarity, Vinzielhar Nin, an Indigenous leader from Papua New Guinea, added: “We do not want to be seen as victims or have a victim mentality, but to show that we’re here together — to fight this together.”

COP30 will take place in the city of Belém in November.
