STORYLINE:
At least four fires were burning in a national park near Mexico City on Tuesday, as dozens of blazes continue to rip through Mexico following the hottest February since 1953.

El Tepozteco National Park, the hills surrounding the town of Tepoztlan, is a weekend tourist destination some 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of the Mexican capital.

Six hundred emergency workers and two helicopters have been deployed to combat the fires, said Tepoztlan Mayor Perseo Quiroz.

Local volunteers were also assisting.

There were 114 active fires Monday in 23 of Mexico’s 32 states, according to authorities.

Twenty of the fires recorded Monday were hitting protected natural areas.

Some 470,000 acres (191,000 hectares) have burned in the first quarter of the year, compared to 168,000 acres (68,000 hectares) during the same period last year.

On Monday, Mexico’s National Coordinator of Civilian Protection, Laura Velázquez, explained that the fires have been triggered mainly by a lack of rainfall — which has been 32.7% lower this year than the 1991-2020 average — and an unusually hot February.

But Quiroz said local authorities have found "evidence that allows us to assume that these (Tepoztlan) fires have been started by arson."

Various prosecutors’ offices across the country were investigating similar allegations.
