STORYLINE:
China’s national bureau of statistics said Wednesday that China’s economy expanded at a 5.4% annual pace in January-March, supported by strong exports ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump’s rapid increases in tariffs on Chinese exports.
Analysts are forecasting that the world’s second largest economy will slow significantly in coming months, however, as tariffs as high as 145% on U.S. imports from China take effect.
Speaking to reporters in Beijing, Deputy Director of the National Bureau of Statistics Sheng Laiyun said that despite U.S. tariffs posing some pressure, "it does not change the overriding trend of China’s economic growth."
Sheng also said that China would roll out new macro policies " in light of the changing external dynamics", allowing them to "navigate the difficulties."
China also appointed a new top international trade negotiator on Wednesday amid tariff tensions with the U.S.
