STORYLINE:
Lying on a hospital bed in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis on Wednesday, the young woman hugged the body of her dead baby girl.
Ahlam Seiam was due to celebrate her first birthday later this month but she was killed in an overnight Israeli airstrike as she slept in a tent her parents had built on the roof of a building in the southern Gaza city.
Her grandfather, Nashat Seiam, said they woke up in the early hours of Wednesday to a loud bang when he rushed upstairs to find his son, Mohamed, crying.
Ahlam’s 23-year-old mother, Shaima Seiam, was wounded in the strike. She was taken to Nasser Hospital where her husband also brought the body of their daughter for burial.
"What is she? Is she launching rockets?" the grandfather said. "They are asleep, people are asleep."
"We were displaced, we fled from Rafah to here, then we returned to Rafah, and then we were displaced and death followed us here," he added. "Wherever you go, death will catch up with you. There is no escape from it."
Ahlam was born on April 30 last year and she was the first grandchild in the family, her aunt said.
