"I very happy to be here in Kyiv together and to begin acknowledge the real sadness over the attack in Sumy yesterday, a Palm Sunday attack on civilian population worshipping, shopping. What a horrific attack, in the words of our Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and how clearly it demonstrates the treachery of Russia having started this war and continuing to maintain it even as a discussion is underway about ceasefire. You put it together with recent attacks in other locations, it is a grim day and I know, a national day of mourning here in Ukraine for these victims."

"The need is for supporting Ukraine in every way we can in air defense. And obviously Patriot systems are a great air defense mechanism. The U.S. is not the only nation that has them, other nations have them as well. And sometimes some nations provide some parts of of the system and other nations provide others. So the goal should be that Ukraine’s allies robustly support Ukraine’s air defense. And if that includes Patriots, if that’s what is needed, we need to do our part to make that happen. Again, whether it’s all from the U.S. or whether it’s from U.S. and allies, I will leave the appropriate weapons systems for the discussion between our military leadership, but I’m committed to making sure that the investment in Ukrainian air defense is solid."

"I have to look at recent actions of Vladimir Putin and Russia, and it makes me sceptical about the good faith of their interest in the ceasefire. The U.S. would like a ceasefire on fair terms, Europe would like a ceasefire on fair terms, Ukraine deserves a ceasefire on fair terms. The events including the strike yesterday make me question the good faith of Russian interest in the ceasefire. But I hope I’m wrong, and they should demonstrate that I’m wrong by showing a real interest in getting to this point of ceasefire."

STORYLINE:
U.S. Democratic Senator Tim Kaine said on Monday that he is "sceptical about the good faith" of Russia’s interest in a ceasefire with Ukraine.
"The U.S. would like a ceasefire on fair terms, Europe would like a ceasefire on fair terms, Ukraine deserves a ceasefire on fair terms," Kaine told The Associated Press during a news conference in Kyiv.
He was speaking a day after Russian missiles struck the heart of the Ukrainian city of Sumy as people gathered to celebrate Palm Sunday. Officials say the strike killed at least 34 people.
"The events including the strike yesterday make me question the good faith of Russian interest in the ceasefire. But I hope I’m wrong, and they should demonstrate that I’m wrong by showing a real interest in getting to this point of ceasefire," Kaine said.
Senator Kaine also stressed that "the goal should be that Ukraine’s allies robustly support Ukraine’s air defense."
"And if that includes Patriots, if that’s what is needed, we need to do our part to make that happen. Again, whether it’s all from the U.S. or whether it’s from U.S. and allies," he said.
