“Evidently in this case we are talking about elderly, geriatric animals. They’ve arrived from places where they had troubled lives. They require extra care and constant attention. Some of them come from a circus or other places where they didn’t have proper care and training. In time, they can develop problems, including arthrosis (degenerative joint disease) and other mobility problems. As well as other problems. So we must do our best to minimize their ailments.”

“There have been studies of mourning among elephants in the wild. But never in captivity. And in this case with a pack that are not related. We are talking about three elephants that haven’t met each other until they arrived here. They met and got to know each other here, at an advanced age. We want to be pioneers in this research. So we can explain it from the Barcelona Zoo and University.”

“This is an evolving topic. And we are actually seeing that many species have a longer lifespan under human care than their counterparts in the wild. This is pushing us to develop more research and improve practices because we are having to care for animals that in nature they would be probably victims of predators or they would die of hunger or diseases. So we are now dealing with all those new health issues that are new for us and for science. Because we are not used to seeing those animals living so long.”

A zoo in Barcelona is closely monitoring its two aging elephants, Susi and Bully, as the two females cope with the recent death of a long-time companion.
These elderly elephants with a combined age of 92 years, prove that care in their later years is just as important for animals as it is for humans.
STORYLINE:
These elderly elephants at a zoo in Barcelona are being well looked-after in their old age.
Geriatric care for animals is becoming increasingly important for zoos and old Susi and Bully, these two females African elephants, are no exception.
Susi is 52 years old and Bully is 40.
