STORYLINE:
Venezuela’s National Assembly on Thursday approved a decree declaring a state of economic emergency, granting President Nicolás Maduro special powers to manage the country’s economy as their financial crisis becomes steadily entrenched.
Vice President Delcy Rodríguez defended the measure before lawmakers, saying the government must act preemptively amid global uncertainty. “It is the right thing to do,” she said.
Rodríguez also insisted that the country’s oil and gas production remains stable and in recovery, “by our own effort.”
Following the legislative approval, the decree will be submitted to the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice for constitutional review, as is mandated by Venezuelan law.
The approval formalizes the emergency powers Maduro signed into effect earlier this week, allowing broad intervention in economic policy.
