STORYLINE:
Dozens of Tibetan Youth Congress activists protested in front of the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi on Friday following the death of revered Tibetan religious leader Tulku Hungkar Dorje while in custody in Vietnam.

The protesters chanted anti-China slogans and were forcibly pushed into vehicles and taken away by police as they tried to enter the high-security complex.

Since late September 2024, Tulku Hungkar Dorje "had lived in hiding in Vietnam due to the harassment he faced in Tibet from Chinese authorities," the Tibetan government-in-exile said in a press statement, demanding an independent and transparent investigation into his death.

China claims Tibet has been part of its territory for centuries.

The Dalai Lama- their spiritual leader – has made Dharamshala in northern India his headquarters since fleeing Tibet after a failed uprising against Chinese rule in 1959.

The Tibetan Youth Congress blames China for repressing Tibetan culture and denying fundamental human rights to the people in Tibet.

India considers Tibet to be part of China, although it hosts tens of thousands of Tibetan exiles.
