Naples, Italy – 11 April 2025
1. Various of a marble statue of Satyr from the 1st century BC, one of 660 archaeological artefacts seized by a special unit of Italian Carabinieri targeting antiques traffickers in recent decades on display at the Archaeological Museum of Naples (MANN)
2. Various of vases, wine cups and a statuette from the 5th century BC
3. Various of a marble head depicting an athlete and a bronze head of Emperor Philip ‘the Arab’
4. SOUNDBITE (Italian), Massimo Osanna, Italy’s Director General of Museums and curator of the exhibition:
“It is a beautiful exhibition that tells a beautiful story, a story also of redemption for our stolen archaeological artefacts, which often find their way into private property or even international museums. Thanks to the work of the public prosecutor’s office and the carabinieri, together with the ministry, (these artefacts) are finally coming home and to light because they have been kept in storage for a long time, often even for 20 years, awaiting investigation. Now thanks to the synergy between the various bodies they are returning to the public and we are finally able to show them to everyone.”

5. Various of bronze ornaments from the 9th – 8th century BC
6. Close up of the tip of a bronze javelin
7. Wide of terracotta plates, vases and containers
8. Close up of a dolphin-shaped container
9. SOUNDBITE (Italian), Massimo Osanna, Italy’s Director General of Museums and curator of the exhibition:
“As always in clandestine excavations and as always in recoveries (of finds) the material is very heterogeneous, not only in provenance and chronology, from prehistoric to Roman times, but also in quality. There are records of looted Apulian tombs where there were serial productions of black-glazed ware and the so-called ‘Gnathia’ vases. Then there are masterpieces, the red-figure vases returned from the Getty in 2006 that are truly textbook pieces of 5th century BC red-figure pottery. In addition to these there are sculptures such as the bronze statue of Philip ‘the Arab’ which is not only extremely rare but was discovered thanks to the work of this exhibition.”

10. Various of black glazed ceramic vases and bowls
11. Various of two vases
12. Various of 4th – 2nd century BC finds from a sanctuary
13. Various of three frescoed slabs from the so-called Tomb of the Knight of Paestum (4th century BC), which were once in the private collection of Maria Callas
14. SOUNDBITE (Italian), Massimo Osanna, Italy’s Director General of Museums and curator of the exhibition:
“The stories (of these finds) are beautiful because they are stories that are not just stories of archaeology, or of archaeological seizures. They are stories that are also intertwined with cases of the Camorra or with cases of crime more generally, where archaeology entered only almost by chance. Then there are cases of recidivist collectors, who continue to accumulate despite past convictions.”

15. Various of amphorae for wine from the 1st century BC
16. Various of bronze coins
17. Various of gold and bronze artefacts from the 1st century AD
18. Close up of a gold leaf-shaped foil and finger ring
19. SOUNDBITE (Italian)
Major Massimo Eposito, commander of the Naples Carabinieri Cultural Heritage Protection Unit:

20. Various of two parts of the large marble statue of a prince or emperor from the 2nd century AD
21. Various of marble sculptures
